Boschkloof Wines Chenin Blanc

Boschkloof Wines Chenin Blanc paired with Chicken Avocado Salad
March 8, 2018

While this wine shared the Lekker labeling like the rosé I had tried in July of 2017, I found that it was from a different winery named Boschkloof Wines. I was already loving the name of this winery. It just sounded fun and maybe a little fruity, just like how this wine looked with it’s citrusy gleam and contrasting sky blue label. My expectations were runny mighty high at this point. This was my second Lekker labeled wine. The first one hit it out of the park. This wine was made of 100% chenin blanc grapes. Chenin Blanc originated in…

Point Ormond Sauvignon Blanc

Point Ormond Sauvignon Blanc paired with Citrus Pulled Pork
February 22, 2018

This week, I was simply happy to be moving westward from New Zealand to Australia. I figured things had to start looking up if we moved a whole country over right? This wine was labeled in a playful way, which reminded me of the tree house we had when I was growing up. It almost made me want to get up and frolic about. The fun label matched the tagline of the company, which was, “Exciting, affordable wines of Australia.” * Point Ormond winery focuses on high acid, low alcohol wines, with an affordable price. In order to accomplish this,…

Iconic Wines SK Chardonnay

Iconic Wines SK Chardonnay paired with Roast Goose and Brussel Sprouts
February 7, 2018

It’s safe to say, I was pumped for this week. It was time to try another wine form Iconic Wines! Last time I received a wine from this producer, it was a Rosé. I loved the tradition of labeling the bottles with female superhero figures. It was fun and the label art was very cool and well done. According to Iconic Wines’ website, this bottle was actually referred to as “SK Chardonnay.” The SK stands for sidekick. They have also produced an “SK Cabernet Sauvignon” and claim that these wines “represent the finest wine we create at everyday drinking value.”…

Chateau Allegret Entre-deux-Mers

Chateau Allegret Entre deux Mers paired with Chocolate Mousse
January 24, 2018

I was very excited for this week! The beautiful green of the glass bottle with the intricate label was calling out to me. This would mark my first white wine from the infamous Bordeaux region. For some reason, Bordeaux is just what I think of as the quintessential wine region. It always makes me feel extra fancy saying that I’m drinking a wine from Bordeaux. It might be silly, but it is the reputation that the region has garnered. Entre-deux-Mers is the sub-region of Bordeaux, France where this wine came from. The name translates to “between two seas” in reference…

Rock Point Pinot Gris

Rock Point Pinot Gris paired with Chicken Parmesan
January 17, 2018

I have to admit. I was a little more excited to taste the food I made for this week than the wine. Come on though! Who doesn’t like chicken parmesan. I was hoping this would turn out to be a great pairing that would enhance the dish altogether and make for a wonderful meal. The grapes for this wine were grown in the Pacific Northwest, which holds a special place in my heart and is my favorite wine region. I have not had a bad experience with any wine from this region yet. We could blame it on my love…

Blue Quail Sauvignon Blanc

Blue Quail Sauvignon Blanc paired with Seasoned Pork and Monterey Jack Cheese
December 4, 2017

October was shaping up to be a very familiar wine month. It was nice with the fall weather moving in to be able to reach for something more recognizable. I have tried several a Sauvignon Blanc and found them to be hit or miss most of the time. Sometimes they were just too light to hold up to pairing with anything and not flavorful enough to stand on their own. But we would see what this week had in store. Blue Quail Wines are grown on a completely organic vineyard on McFadden Farms. The vineyard is situated between the Russian…

Jeannette Eger Riesling

December 4, 2017

I was very excited for this week! I would be trying a Riesling that I had chosen from Wine Awesomeness for winning Instagrammer of the week. Each week they choose an Instagram post based on tags used to win a free bottle of wine from their site. Bonus! You get to pick it out! Jeannette Eger’s story is a rather interesting one. She grew up deep in German wine country and her family owned a very large vineyard. She worked with them until she felt the yearning to produce something all her own and on a much smaller scale. She…

Clot d’encis White Grenache

December 4, 2017

I thought this week would make for an interesting tasting. I had tried red wine Grenache before, but now it was time for white Grenache. I thought it would be interesting to see the similarities and differences between these two varietals. Clot d’encis wines belong to the Terra Alta region of the Catalan wine region. The region has become known for its white wines, although there are a few reds grown there as well. The whites from Terra Alta have the classic Mediterranean character, with their definitive herbal and fruity tastes and scents.* Clot d’encis is part of the larger…

Six Hats Viognier

December 4, 2017

This week marked a completely new wine for me. It was time for a Viognier. The first thing I wanted to know about it was how to pronounce it. No one wants to sound silly or like they don’t know what they’re talking about, so a quick search produced the pronunciation “Vee-yoh-N’YAY” and this made me feel a little more confident before diving into my tasting. The grapes for this Viognier were produced in a most interesting sounding place. Piekenierskloof. I knew my research had to start there with a name like that! Piekenierskloof is a ward in the Western…

Graef Chardonnay

December 4, 2017

I know I have had my fair share of Chardonnays. I think just about everyone has. Those golden hued bottles pull you to them in just the right way. Maybe just the golden color makes us feel a little richer. If you are looking for something familiar you can usually count on that oaky, buttery taste. However in recent years, the Chardonnay industry has been shaking it up a bit and it is proving to be quite the improvement according to wine lovers far and wide… Chardonnay is the most popular white wine grape in the entire world and the…
