Frico Lambrusco

Frico Lambrusco paired with Pork Belly and Sweet Potato Fries

The wine for this week made me laugh as soon as I opened the box. The large pig on the label of the can let me know that this wine label didn’t take itself too seriously, but that it also might be Italian. Italians love to pair their wine with pork and often keep both of them paired as locally as possible. I would highly recommend this too if you can!

I knew automatically that I would need some pork to pair this with and was thankful that my husband had made a trip to Costco that week. He picked up some pork belly to smoke and I was chomping at the bit to try these two together. Pork belly is one of my all time favorite foods! It’s deliciously fatty and not quite as on hand as bacon so it feels a little special since we don’t have it near as often.

Lambrusco is currently in the middle of trying to make a comeback. It has a reputation of being cheap, sweet, and fizzy, but some vintners are trying to turn that around. Wine lovers are taking note and choosing light Lambruscos more often as an aperitif and darker grape Lambruscos as something to pair their meals with.*

This wine was from Emilia, Italy and sampled on November 9, 2018. I poured this wine from the can into a glass and waited a few minutes before taking a whiff. When I did, it smelled like sparkling pomegranate water. It also just gave off some juiciness somehow in the scent. My first taste resulted in a, “Wow!” This wine really hits you. I was listening to “Crushin It” by The Slay Team. It almost tastes like a dark berry hard candy of some sort. It definitely helped cut through the fatty pork belly, which was great.

I gave this wine a rating of 3.5. It’s one of the better wines from a can that I have enjoyed, but being that it was getting really chilly already and I couldn’t enjoy this wine outdoors or poolside, it wasn’t as fun or convenient to drink.
