Domaine de la Damase Grenache

Domaine de la Damase Grenache paired with Salmon and Mashed Cauliflower

I was really digging the word cloud style of this wine’s label when I first saw it. I’m always a fan of a good word cloud and I thought this was a pretty unique and fun way to label a wine.

I was excited about this wine because it was 100% Grenache. Up until now I had only had Grenache in different red blends. Sometimes it made up about 90% of the bottle, but never a full bottle until now.

In researching this vineyard and wine, I stumbled upon a website for the vineyard, which explained that it was operated by Bernadette and Sébastien Latour. The vineyard has been in the Latour family for five generations and the grapes never sold to a cooperative since 1877. Two varietals are grown for U.S. consumption only. Besides the Grenache that I was about to try, they also grew Mourvedre for the U.S. * While these two varietals are technically grown in the Côtes du Rhône region in France, French law will not allow them to be labeled as such. This is why they are labeled as simply “Grenache” and “Mourvedre.” *

Just like last week, this wine was a part of the Hobo Wine Company. Kenny Likitprakong befriended the Latour Family and since then Kenny has acted as the importer for the Grenache and Mourvedre wines. *

This wine was from Côtes du Rhône, France and sampled on April 25, 2018. I noted the deep red color and then inhaled deeply. It smelled like a breeze at the beginning of fall, with just that bit of crispness in the air. I was listening to “Lush Life” by Zara Larrson. The first taste brought forth a heavy body with hints of dark fruit. There were also subtle stone tastes hiding in the glass. It was surprisingly good with the salmon. It almost overpowered it, but thanks to the heavy dill seasoning, it did not. It was very good with the mashed cauliflower.

I gave this wine a rating of 2.5. The taste and scent fell flat. It was hard to get much out of it at all. I would suggest decanting it for a longer amount of time than I did initially.
