Yardstick Wines Red Blend

Here was another Lekker labeled wine for this week as well! This time it was a full on red blend. I had not been too impressed with the chenin blanc from last week, but for some reason this nice looking red was calling out to me. Maybe it was the fact that it was the last day of February. The month of love and the last of the winter months were coming to an end and it felt like this might be just the wine to bid it adieu with.

This wine was made in partnership with the winery Yardstick Wines in South Africa. The blend of grapes included Cinsaut, Grenache, Mouvédre, Syrah, and Viognier. Last week, the chenin blanc originated from Stellenbosch and this week I discovered that Stellenbosch University is where the winemaker, Adam Mason, studied. He was the creator of this red blend. *

While the grapes were sourced from Yardstick Wines, the winemaker actually works for Mulderbosch Wines. Mulderbosch Wines partners with two smaller wineries and even offers their wine in their own tasting room in South Africa. It seemed like a great example of a welcoming community of growers in South Africa. *

This wine was from Western Cape, South Africa and sampled on February 28, 2018. The deep red color of this wine was already drawing me in so much that it was making research difficult. The scents of dark chocolate and black pepper filled my nose. The first taste was velvety smooth on my tongue. I was listening to “Still Beating” by Mac Demarco. It was like drinking spicy cherry juice that was watered down just right. It brought out more of the delicious spice on the dry-rub ribs as well.

I gave this wine a rating of 4.5. It was perfect for pairing with the ribs and afterwards, I couldn’t resist going back for another round. I would definitely purchase this wine again and would bring it along to my next barbeque for sure.
