Boschkloof Wines Chenin Blanc

Boschkloof Wines Chenin Blanc paired with Chicken Avocado Salad

While this wine shared the Lekker labeling like the rosé I had tried in July of 2017, I found that it was from a different winery named Boschkloof Wines. I was already loving the name of this winery. It just sounded fun and maybe a little fruity, just like how this wine looked with it’s citrusy gleam and contrasting sky blue label. My expectations were runny mighty high at this point.

This was my second Lekker labeled wine. The first one hit it out of the park. This wine was made of 100% chenin blanc grapes. Chenin Blanc originated in France and is mostly grown there and in South Africa. In South Africe, chenin blanc holds the title for most widely grown grape. Chenin blanc grapes are used to create a wide variety of styles of wine. From sparkling to off-dry, chenin blanc has proven itself to be up to the challenge. *

The popularity of growing chenin blanc in South Africa was ushered in by the introduction of temperature stabilized fermentation vessels methods, such as aging in stainless steel tanks instead of wooden barrels. This ability to produce off-dry style whites with less sweetness and a more crisp taste sparked more interest in white wine and put South Africa on the map as a wine growing region. *

This wine was from Stellenbosch, South Africa and sampled on February 25, 2018. This wine had a lovely straw color that was just edging on a lemony-citrus vibe. I could smell the lemon coming from the glass even before I got my nose to it. It was so strong that it reminded me of PineSol. Once I was able to get a bigger whiff, I noticed some green apple lurking behind all of that lemon. The first taste brought medium to high acidity. I was listening to “Where’d You Go” by Fort Minor. The wine was very crisp on my tongue with extremely light citrus tastes. The light citrus flavors cut through the fatty avocado and made a nice compliment to the salad. In the end, it seemed a bit too much like a lemon cleaner to be enjoyed as a drink.

I gave this wine a rating of 2.0. It was barely even tolerable after a few sips and that was only if you could stop thinking about your floor needing to be mopped in the meantime.
