I was very excited for this week! The beautiful green of the glass bottle with the intricate label was calling out to me. This would mark my first white wine from the infamous Bordeaux region. For some reason, Bordeaux is just what I think of as the quintessential wine region. It always makes me feel extra fancy saying that I’m drinking a wine from Bordeaux. It might be silly, but it is the reputation that the region has garnered.
Entre-deux-Mers is the sub-region of Bordeaux, France where this wine came from. The name translates to “between two seas” in reference to the two rivers that line the north and south borders of the region. Something kind of interesting about this sub-region is that in the mid 1900s, many vineyards were uprooted and replaced with more popular red wine grapes. However, as whites are becoming higher in demand, the growing of white grapes is slowly gaining ground again.*
Bordeaux wines are labeled a bit differently than other wines. The labels can be so elegant, but also very difficult to read and understand. This wine was labeled as Grand Vin of Bordeaux and seeing as I had absolutely no idea what that meant. I went on a quest to better understand French labeling. I found an exhaustive list from “The Wine Cellar Insider” and discovered that my Grand Vin of Bordeaux meant that it was the best wine from a producer.*
This wine was from Bordeaux, France and sampled on November 22, 2017. After noting the straw color that poured out from the green glass bottle, I smelled sourdough bread and fresh flowers. It was almost like a spring picnic in a glass with some peach undertones. The first taste produced just the right amount of acidity. The flavors included light-colored fruits with a tad of lemon zest that would just tickle the back of my throat. It was a nice compliment to the dark chocolate, as it eased away some of the bitterness.
I gave this wine a rating of 2.5. It was okay, but not something I would search out in the future.
