I found myself with another wine from La Perdrix this week and a husband who wanted to grill steaks. Fortunately for me, the wine was a red and my husband is excellent at grilling steaks. I prepped some sweet potatoes and we were all set! This wine was a blend of 45% Grenache, 35% Syrah, and 20% Carignan. My husband’s favorite varietal so far has been Syrah, so I was very pleased to have something along the lines that I hoped he would enjoy. Since we had already learned so recently about the region this wine was from and history…

Conde de Alicante Blanco
It was hard to decide what I was more anticipating for this week, the food or the wine. My husband was out of town, which always leads to me trying out some recipe I’ve found that I knew he would not enjoy. This week, it was called, “Egg Roll in a Bowl.” Once seated beside this bottle of white wine though, I was most eager to have them together. This wine was a blend of 50% Marseguera grapes and 50% Macabeo grapes. Having heard of neither of these before, I started my research there. Both of these varietals are not…
Mitolo Vermentino
Since it’s a scary time of year and this is a special Halloween blog post, I’ll try to do it up right with some special tricks and treats. This year my husband and I went all out for Halloween. We dressed up as Ron and Tammy II from Parks and Rec and had a total blast! We even won a costume contest! But enough with the bragging, let’s get down to the wine. This week’s wine was 100% Vermentino. Vermentino is a white wine grape that is grown mostly in Italy. However, the grapes for this wine were grown in…
La Perdrix Costieres de Nimes Blanc
To be honest, I was saving this bottle from my monthly shipment for last because it was the most intriguing. The gold color shined from the bottle and seethed richness. The label, with its partridge art reminded me of the paintings hung in my grandparents’ house of different depictions of grouse in hunting scenes. Perdrix means partridge and when I looked up this winery I was unsurprised to find that its name was based on a hunting reference. The region this winery is located in was a very popular area for hunting and was a particular favorite of King Louis…
Vinaccio Bianco
I did not approach this week’s wine with high expectations. The label was a confusing mismatch of images on the front. On the back, the font was fun, but I noted the labeling of “Vino da Tavola,” or “table wine.” However, I started prepping my food and delved into my research anyway. The labeling of “Vino da Tavola” is generally used to distinguish between “table wines” and high quality wines in Italy. Table wines encompass a variety of different grapes. They can utilize blends of grapes from different regions as well as different vintages. * For this reason, they usually…
Gia Coppola #Overit Rosé
It seems only fitting that I should be writing about a rosé just as summer comes to a close. It’s been quite a fun-filled and busy summer this year. We’ve moved across the country, discovered new foods and local places, been visited by some of our best friends and family, and made lots of new friends as well. Thank goodness we had some good rosé along for the ride. This wine came from the hashtag collection of wines created by Gia Coppola and the winemakers at Francis Ford Coppola Winery. This collection of wines was said to, “be inspired by…
Bodegas Latúe Tempranillo
Ahhhh, a Tempranillo. It felt like seeing an old friend again. Having recently moved from Texas, where Tempranillo reigns supreme, it felt almost nostalgic to pick up a bottle that was pure Tempranillo grapes, even if it wasn’t from Texas, or even the US. Bodegas Latúe is a wine cooperative in Spain that prides itself on being socially responsible as well as ecologically friendly and sustainable. These values are at the forefront of their winemaking. Their vineyards are in central Spain and the climate provides very little rain. The summers are quite warm, but the winters can be harsh as seen…
Castro Ventosa Mencía
I have to say; this wine bottle and label looked extra fancy to me. Not only was I ready for the wine during this pairing; I was extra ready for the food as well. Apple and onion pork chops? Yum! Yes! This wine was 100% Mencía which I had never heard of before, so I started my research there. First off, I had been referring to is as men-see-ah, and quickly realized that it was correctly pronounce men-thee-ah. This grape is grown only in Spain and Portugal. It is generally compared to the better-known grape, Pinot Noir, in that they…
Nexo Garnacha
I was super excited for this week’s wine based on the label alone. It reminded me of my wedding theme with the turquoise tree and little birds. My wedding colors were turquoise and brown and we utilized the image of a swallow in the details because of one of my husband’s tattoos. This label pulled at my heartstrings and had me ready to share a glass with my one and only. I knew going in that Garnacha was another word for Grenache. Grenache is the term used in France and Garnacha in Spain. It is one of the most widely…
Alaia Verdejo
This week, it was all about trying something new. Verdejo was a varietal I’d never heard of, much less tried. I had just settled into a new townhouse in Seattle. I had also bought my first cookbook ever and decided to cook my way through it. This week would make for a combination of all of these things. While this marked the second wine I would try from the Alaia winemaker, it would be the first Verdejo for me. Verdejo is grown mostly in Spain and almost exclusively in the Rueda region. Outside of Spain, is not very well known,…
