Conde de Alicante Blanco

Conde de Alicante Blanco paired with Egg Roll in a Bowl

It was hard to decide what I was more anticipating for this week, the food or the wine. My husband was out of town, which always leads to me trying out some recipe I’ve found that I knew he would not enjoy. This week, it was called, “Egg Roll in a Bowl.” Once seated beside this bottle of white wine though, I was most eager to have them together.

This wine was a blend of 50% Marseguera grapes and 50% Macabeo grapes. Having heard of neither of these before, I started my research there. Both of these varietals are not very popular and rarely seen bottled on their own. In fact, they are used so little that they don’t appear outside of Spain very often. Drinking Marseguera grapes is generally unheard of outside of Spain as that is the only place it is grown. However, Macabeo grapes are found in France and South Africa. *

Alicante has been a major wine region since the time of Ancient Greece, but it was because of literature that the region’s popularity flourished so much. In the Count of Monte Cristothe main character, Edmond Dantès, drank wine from this region, so everyone else wanted to drink wine from there as well. * I wonder if Alexander Dumas gathered any sort of royalty off of that.

This wine was from Alicante, Spain and sampled on October 17, 2018. The scent coming from the glass was so floral that I almost didn’t need to stick my nose in and breath deeply to get a feel for it. But after I did, I also found some fruitier notes like mango. The first taste was still floral to me. There was also some juicy yellow apple in the mix as well. It was like biting into a Golden Delicious apple in the middle of a daisy patch. I was listening to “Bad Liar” by Selena Gomez. The wine definitely helped bring down the spice of the egg roll in a bowl.

I gave this wine a rating of 2.5. It was almost too floral to enjoy drinking. If I hadn’t been eating something so spicy then I don’t know if I could have continued on with it.
