This was a week that had me a little apprehensive but I had been looking forward to it for quite a while. I was just waiting for the perfect day. The day had come. I would be trying my first wine in a can! This meant I could finally have wine at the pool without pouring it into a plastic cup. I then began to think of all of the possibilities. I could go to the beach and finally leave behind feeling bloated from all of the effervescence coming from my usual cans. What a life!
It seems like this year the wine in a can industry just exploded! Interest in canned wine surged. People want it for the pool, the beach, the river, the lake, hiking, camping, game days, and if you can believe it, just general consumption! Since millennials are now the generation that drinks more wine than any other, wineries have to appeal to them in as may ways as possible. Canned wine just provides another way to do that. Being able to purchase it in more places and take it anywhere creates more convenience. Millennials are known to buck tradition, so to them having wine from a can isn’t such a deplorable decision.*
Fortunately winemakers have really shown up when it comes to the challenge of making wine in a can. There really is one for everyone. You can get spritzers, rosé, sparkling, red, and white varieties.* There is even a can labeled the “ManCan” for those who aren’t feeling comfortable with their sexuality. Jk! Jk!
This wine was from Central Coast, California, and sampled on August 12, 2017. I took a deep inhalation and smelled a very cherry scent. It was almost sickeningly so. There was maybe a little leather scent underneath there somewhere. I was listening to “California Nights” by Best Coast. It was probably the most fitting pairing for this wine. The taste was surprisingly bold and similar to dark cola. There was also some licorice taste coming through. It really was not bad at all, but I found it was better poured into a glass. It should be noted that there was no scent to be garnered from being in a can besides aluminum that is.
I gave this wine a rating of 3.0. Poured into a glass, this wine was easily paired with my pool and was a nice compliment to the day. However, from the can I gave this wine a rating of 1.5. It tasted and smelled too much like aluminum and seemed like a flat soda.
