Raimat Family Vineyards Garnacha

Raimat Garnacha paired with Spicy Pork Trashcan Fries

After hosting a housewarming party the weekend before, I knew I would have to be creative when fixing a pairing up for this week. All that was left from the festivities was a bunch of random foods. All little bit of barbeque here, a little bit of veggie tray there, some frozen foods, and some half eaten cheese blocks. Fortunately, the wine this week was a Garnacha, so I knew pairing just about anything would work out ok.

The Garnacha for this week was also a fully organic wine, so I decided to look into organic wines a little bit. It turns out that the definition of what is organic is different for wines in the US, compared to those in other parts of the world. In the US, no sulfites can be added to wine, but for other regions it can be added in. *

Sulfites are what most people blame their after-drinking headaches on. Some people avoid wine altogether for this reason alone. However, sulfite-free wines might give them cause for hope and definitely a reason to at least try wine again. Most sulfite-free wines will taste a bit different than normal wines; so preparing your palate for something a little more on the funky side is a good idea. You shouldn’t be going out and purchasing wine by the case just because it’s “organic” and “sulfite-free.” Always give it a try first so you know what you’re getting into.

This wine was from Catalunya, Spain and sampled on April 9, 2019. The color was your basic red. After swirling and breathing in deeply I could have sworn I had just popped some blueberries in my hand. I was listening to “So Fresh, So Clean” by OutKast. This song reflected the wine perfectly. The tannins were very low. I tasted mostly cherry and a little red apple. There was no bite at all to this wine. It went down smoothly and cleanly. It would be a great intro wine for those who “only drink whites.” It brought down the spice of the spicy pork trashcan fries. It really made for a great casual wine pairing.

I gave this wine a rating of 4.0. This wine was so easy drinking that it would be perfect for hitting up happy hour at your favorite Mexican spot with some chips and salsa. You won’t even miss the margaritas and you’ll definitely save on a few calories!
