Summer was coming and with it, another canned wine. Even though this can was from the same company, Field Recordings, I must say the presentation was much more pleasing to the eye. I also noticed that this wine was a single varietal and not a blend this time. However, it was still a red. I was a little disappointed to not being trying a white this time, but the single varietal still had me intrigued.
This wine was delivered as a two pack in lieu of a regular bottle and it really worked out for how I ended up drinking it. It was Mother’s Day and for the first time in quite a few years, I was actually in my hometown and able to spend the day with my mom. She rarely ever drinks, but I’m usually able to get her to try things on special occasions and I thought this might be perfect.
My mom loves to garden and she really grows some of the most beautiful and impressive plants in and around her yard. So, when the day was almost over and everyone was sitting down around a card table outside surrounded by her lovely plants, I pulled out the two cans and confused them all! They thought I had brought out beer, but I explained that it was wine and I wanted to do a special tasting with my mom for Mother’s Day. So we cracked them open and got down to business.
This wine was from Paso Robles, California and sampled on May 13, 2018. We tried to inhale deeply from the can, but it was nearly impossible to move past the smell of aluminum. So we poured it into a glass and observed the lovely pink coloring. The first taste from the can brought hibiscus flowers, dark grapes, and sadly, more aluminum. We were able to move beyond that more sterile taste to bright red fruits, like red plums once we were drinking from the glass. It reminded me a bit of fruit punch, which made for easy drinking. It had low acidity and a light body.
I gave this wine a rating of 2.5. While the can design was lovely and it looked nice surrounded by my mother’s garden, we both decided that it wasn’t the best wine we’d ever had, even if it was better out of a glass than the can. However, it was refreshing in the warm spring evening and made me care less about losing at cards.
